Sleep Diaries (#2)

Sleep Diaries (#2)

92cm x 145cm

Dyed, patched and layered cotton, stitched.

Sleep Diaries (#2) records the sleeping and waking of the artist’s second child as a newborn. An app to that charted blocks of time in this liminal space are shown as patterns across the cloth. The work incorporates references to Japanese folk methods of constructing textiles in preparation for childbirth called 'bodoko'. Torn inherited fabric from clothes, bedding and household cloth is layered and stitched to reinforce the strips, providing literal and metaphorical ancestral protection.

This work was exhibited at TOAST, Marylebone, London.
